NAIROBI, KENYA – Kenya is mourning the death of controversial gospel musician Rachel Wandeto, who passed away Monday morning at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) after succumbing to severe burns sustained in a brutal petrol attack. She was 70 percent burned.
Wandeto, who gained national attention for tattooing President William Ruto’s face on her chest, was attacked by three masked men in the Mwiki area of Nairobi. The assailants poured petrol on her body and set her ablaze following what police describe as a politically charged confrontation.
Her death has ignited public outrage and fresh fears of rising political violence ahead of the 2027 general election.
Rachel Wandeto Dies After Week-Long Battle
The gospel artist had been fighting for her life at KNH since the early morning hours of May 15, 2026, when she was rushed from Uzima Uhai Hospital. According to medical reports, Wandeto sustained critical burns to her arms, legs, torso, and face.
Her colleague in the music industry, Karangu Muraya, confirmed the tragic news in a short statement: “A great soul has rested… May your soul rest in peace, Rachel Wandeto.”
Muraya earlier revealed that the singer was in urgent need of blood donations as her condition deteriorated rapidly. Despite specialized treatment at Kenya’s national referral hospital, she succumbed to her injuries at around 8 a.m. on Monday, May 18, 2026.
Politically Motivated Attack? The Tattoo Controversy
Preliminary police reports indicate the attack may have been politically motivated. Rachel Wandeto had gone viral earlier in 2026 after publicly declaring unwavering support for President William Ruto’s 2027 re-election bid. She took her loyalty to an extreme by tattooing the President’s face on her chest, alongside the words “TUTAM” (Two Terms) and Ruto’s name on her head.
According to witnesses and initial police statements, her three attackers confronted her along Obama Road, 11th Street, demanding money or benefits they claimed she had received from President Ruto due to her public support. When Wandeto said she had nothing, they poured petrol on her, lit her hair on fire, and fled.
Family sources also revealed that Wandeto had allegedly been evicted by relatives earlier in the year due to political differences stemming from her public support of the President.
Government Response: Murkomen, Kanja Order Immediate Action
The severity of the attack drew swift condemnation from top government officials. Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen visited Wandeto at KNH on Sunday, just hours before her death.
Speaking outside the hospital, Murkomen did not rule out political assassination as a motive.
“If it is true, as there have been speculations around the possibility of a political motive by basically attacking her for her political beliefs, this is really very dangerous for our country,” Murkomen said.
He warned political leaders against incitement, adding: “I want to caution all political leaders to stop inciting Kenyans, radicalising youth, and hiring goons and gangs to attack other citizens. That behaviour is what leads to such acts.”
Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja confirmed that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has been ordered to move with speed.
“The investigations have commenced. The DCI have been directed to move with speed to establish what happened so that all those involved must have their day before a court of law,” Kanja ordered.
As of Monday afternoon, no arrests have been made. The three masked men remain at large.
How the Attack Unfolded
Police reports indicate that members of the public alerted authorities after Wandeto was rushed to Uzima Uhai Hospital shortly after midnight on Friday, May 15. She was barely conscious, with severe burns over most of her body. Officers who visited the scene on Obama Road 11th Street found evidence of petrol and burnt clothing.
Due to the extent of her injuries, she was immediately referred to Kenyatta National Hospital, where she remained in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) until her death Monday morning.
Public Outrage and Calls for Justice
Photos of Wandeto’s injuries circulated widely on social media, sparking outrage from Kenyans across the political divide. Many have called for the government to protect citizens with unpopular political views, while others demanded that the President personally intervene.
Human rights organizations have condemned the killing, describing it as an extrajudicial attack on freedom of expression. The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) has asked the DCI to release regular updates on the investigation.
Rachel Wandeto’s body is currently at KNH’s mortuary pending a post-mortem examination. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by her family in the coming days.
What Happens Next?
With the 2027 general election approaching, Wandeto’s death has become a flashpoint for debates around political intolerance in Kenya. Investigators are now reviewing CCTV footage from the Mwiki area and interviewing witnesses to identify the three masked attackers.
The DCI has appealed to anyone with information to report to the nearest police station.
